Tinian Mayor Seeks Help On Unexploded Ordnance

Mayor Joey P. San Nicolas, in a letter dated May 8, 2015, has requested the assistance of the Office of the Governor for investigation of the presence of World War II unexploded ordnances and other hazardous materials located in a coral pit behind the Japanese Communication Building on Tinian. The site is within the boundary of the Proposed Range Complex B identified in the CJMT Draft Environmental Impact Study.

Under Article 9, Section B (Improvement: Restoration) of the 1984 Lease and Lease-back for Tinian, “with respect to Saipan and Tinian, the U.S. will correct damage including removal of unexploded ordnance and exploded ordnance fragments introduced or uncovered by the United States during term of the lease agreement.”

The investigation and removal of such ordnances and hazardous materials is critical, San Nicolas said.

He pointed out that the CJMT DEIS did not identify this site and requests for historical artifacts found during the investigation to be returned to the Municipality of Tinian for display.
