MAYOR SAN NICOLAS MEETS WITH HKE REGARDING TINIAN DYNASTY CASINO OPERATIONS
In a meeting with representatives from Hong Kong Entertainment (HKE) and Spectrum Gaming, HKE’s Casino Operation Consultants, it was confirmed to Tinian Mayor JP San Nicolas that Tinian Dynasty will be closing its casino operation floor temporarily as of Friday afternoon. This decision stems from the inability of tour operators to sell its two island destination tour package, which includes Tinian and Saipan, as a result of Typhoon Soudelor’s recent devastation of the CNMI. Charter flights are currently unable to land on Saipan during its scheduled night arrivals due to the airport’s limited day time only operational hours.
Out of concern for the collateral damage that would result of the Dynasty’s closure, Mayor San Nicolas requested for the meeting with Dynasty officials to address some of his concerns of the rippling effect that the closure would have on the community, most especially the employees whose lives will be greatly impacted.
“Revenues generated by the casino operations has been a life line for many people who rely on the Dynasty for employment or whose employment with the Municipality is supported by casino revenues.” Mayor San Nicolas asked HKE officials what their plans were to alleviate the burden on Dynasty employees. Dynasty acting hotel and casino manager Chris Bishop informed the Mayor that they will be providing all employees with free lodging and meals in the interim. Bishop also confirmed that Dynasty will be paying employees one pay period this Friday and are currently working to get caught up with all pay periods within the coming weeks.
Over a month ago, TCGCC entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with HKE and Tinian Entertainment Co. (TEC) for the purposes of transferring ownership and operational control of HKE to TEC. To this regard, Mayor San Nicolas expressed his confidence that “TCGCC and HKE will work cooperatively towards the goal of reopening the casino operations and in the interim, execute a temporary closure plan that will maintain the integrity of the industry in the interim.”
The Mayor’s immediate concern is to ensure that he is able to meet the Municipality’s payroll obligation which includes TCGCC’s personnel cost and the ability to deliver essential supplemental assistance such as medical referral.
“It is my responsibility to ensure that we have the ability to pay our employees and to continue providing essential services. Revenue from the casino allows me to do that. It is my hope that this closure is temporary. I ask those who will be directly and greatly impacted by this for their patience.”
