VETERANS DAY REMARKS

GOOD MORNING AND ON BEHALF OF THE PEOPLE OF TINIAN I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND A VERY SPECIAL WELCOME TO ALL OF OUR VETERANS TO TODAY’S CEREMONY. THROUGHOUT THE UNITED STATES AND ON U.S. MILITARY BASES AROUND THE WORLD, VETERANS DAY IS CELEBRATED TO OBSERVE AND HONOR ALL THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED IN THE U.S. ARMED FORCES. EARLIER THIS YEAR WE RECOGNIZED THE MANY BRAVE SOLDIERS WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FIGHTING FOR OUR FREEDOM. TODAY, IT IS JUST AS IMPORTANT THAT WE RECOGNIZE ALL THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED TO PRESERVE OUR WAY OF LIFE AND THE FREEDOMS AND LIBERTIES WE ENJOY. WHEN I LOOKED UP THE DEFINITION OF “VETERAN”, IT STATED THAT A VETERAN IS A PERSON WHO SERVED, EVEN FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, IN THE U.S. ARMED FORCES. WHAT THAT MEANT TO ME WAS THAT REGARDLESS OF THE LENGTH OF TIME, IT IS THE ACT OF SERVING THAT IS RECOGNIZED. HOWEVER, I WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THOSE WHO HAVE SPENT A CAREER IN THE ARMED FORCES AND EXTEND TO YOU A MOST SPECIAL RECOGNITION FOR YOUR DEDICATION AND SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY. BUT TODAY, I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS EVENT ONE STEP FURTHER AND ALSO RECOGNIZE THOSE FROM TINIAN WHO ARE CURRENTLY SERVING OUR COUNTRY IN VIRTUALLY ALL CORNERS OF THE WORLD. THE PEOPLE OF TINIAN HAVE A VERY SPECIAL BOND WITH THE MILITARY AND I AM CONSTANTLY AMAZED AS TO HOW MANY OF OUR PEOPLE HAVE SERVED OR ARE CURRENTLY SERVING IN THE ARMED FORCES. TO ME, THIS SHOWS NOT ONLY OUR PATRIOTISM AND PRIDE FOR OUR COUNTRY BUT A TRUE COMMITMENT TO DEFENDING OUR BELIEFS AND VALUES. EVERY YEAR MORE AND MORE OF OUR YOUTH ENLIST IN THE VARIOUS BRANCHES OF THE MILITARY. OFTEN, ONE EXCELS IN THEIR MILITARY CAREER TO RETURN HOME TO TINIAN TO SERVE AS A ROLE MODEL FOR THE NEXT GENERATION. TODAY, I AM ESPECIALLY PROUD TO WELCOME HOME USMC MAJOR ADRIAN EVANGELISTA WHO MADE A SPECIAL VISIT TO TINIAN TO HONOR OUR VETERANS. I UNDERSTAND THAT TINIAN HAS NEARLY 200 INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE EITHER CURRENTLY SERVING OR HAVE SERVED IN THE ARMED FORCES. THEY HAVE SERVED IN THE AIR FORCE, ARMY, MARINE CORPS, NAVY, AND COAST GUARD. MANY HAVE DEDICATED OVER TWENTY YEARS TO THE MILITARY AND MANY HAVE SERVED DURING CONFLICT. BUT REGARDLESS OF LENGTH OF SERVICE, ALL OF THEM HAVE PROUDLY SERVED THEIR COUNTRY AND DESERVE THE HIGHEST PRAISE AND GRATITUDE FROM OUR PEOPLE.

As veterans, I am sure you have all been following the various military development plans for Tinian that have been proposed since Washington, D.C. began their “Pivot to the Pacific” back in 2006. Although we have been able to deal with the Mariana Islands Training and Testing plan (MITT), as well as the Joint Guam Program Office plan (JGPO), the Commonwealth Joint Military Training plan (CJMT) and the Air Force Divert Facility plan have been, to say the least, somewhat problematic. As you may have read in the papers, I have written to Governor Inos, requesting him to initiate the Civilian-Military Advisory Council, as provided for in the Technical Agreement which was attached to the Covenant. When our forefathers negotiated the Covenant, as well as the Technical Agreement establishing the Tinian leased lands, they recognized the time would come when we – the civilian community of Tinian and the military community – would need to revisit the Technical Agreement and make adjustments. That time has come. In my opinion, I believe the CMAC, once established, will be a long-term effort between the people of Tinian and the military establishment to resolve problems in an amicable fashion. We need to address some issues before the first boots hit the ground. Then, we will need to continuously modify plans to meet the challenges we face as the military development begins and progresses. That being said,

AS I WELCOME ALL OF OUR VETERANS AND JOIN YOU IN THE CELEBRATION OF VETERANS DAY, I WOULD LIKE TO END WITH A QUOTE FROM PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN “TODAY AS NEVER BEFORE, WE MUST PRAY FOR GOD’S HELP IN BROADENING AND DEEPENING THE PEACE WE ENJOY. LET US PRAY FOR FREEDOM AND JUSTICE AND A MORE STABLE WORLD. AND LET US MAKE A COMPACT TODAY WITH THE DEAD, A PROMISE IN THE WORDS FOR WHICH GENERAL RIDGEWAY LISTENED, I WILL NOT FAIL THEE, NOR FORSAKE THEE.”

THANK YOU, SI YU’US MA’ASE, SALAMAT PO.
