MAYOR SANNICOLAS DICUSSES EFFECT OF TINIAN DYNASTY HOTEL CLOSURE WITH HKE

Upon receipt of the notice of Tinian Dynasty’s hotel closure from March 5th to April 15th, Mayor Joey P. San Nicolas communicated with Mr. Chun Wai Chan, HKE Chairman, urging HKE to provide their plans on reopening.  In his March 4, 2016 letter to Chairman Chan, Mayor San Nicolas expressed his concerns as the closure “will greatly affect Tinian’s tourism industry and upcoming signature events.”  Some of the upcoming events include the Micronesian Youth Conference from March 14th – 18th and the Annual San Jose Fiesta in May.  Mayor San Nicolas and the Tinian Leadership also expressed their concerns about the welfare of the Tinian Dynasty employees and how this closure affects them.

In a response from Mr. Christopher Bishop, TDHC General Manager, the Mayor and the Tinian Leadership were assured that the arrangements for the Micronesian Youth Conference will not be affected and that Tinian Dynasty is expected to resume business prior to the San Jose Fiesta.  Additionally, Mr. Bishop indicated that their employees will be working minimal hours during the closure period and will receive free housing and low cost meals.  According to Mr. Bishop, employees “will have full payrolls on both March 4th and 18th; and they will be receiving 5 payrolls plus 25% liquated damages on March 15th, similar to the 5+ payrolls they just received late in February.”

The economic effect on Tinian and especially the employees are a great concern for Mayor San Nicolas and the Tinian Leadership.  “We look forward to the reopening of the Tinian Dynasty and are committed to working towards increased economic activities and addressing the welfare of employees,” said Mayor San Nicolas.
